Natural Hair & Black Art…

One of my dearest friends, who is a Black Art connoisseur, visited me in FL bringing with her this as a present for me. She said when she saw it she immediately thought of me, especially with it being art about natural hair.

I’m really touched by this piece. I can relate to each of the words, having felt or lived each one at some point in life. Each time I look at it I’m inspired in a different way whether it is a chuckle, reflection or a feeling I’m in the midst of.

That’s the magic of what art can do for you which I appreciate so much!

Thank you so much ASH!

Naturally Inspiring – Angela Simmons

Earlier today Angela Simmons, Rev Run’s (of Run DMC) daughter, tweeted the following; “Just took my weave out.. Look how long my hair grew. It’s so thick !!”

She has massive natural hair which looks thick, healthy and gorgeous! Whether she has grown it out intentionally or not, one of the keys that I believe in for achieving hair growth is low to no manipulation which she more than likely achieved by wearing protective styles in the form of weaves. Weather you are for or against wearing weaves there is one thing for certain, when done correctly, they serve as protective styling of your hair. I hope with all the twitter buzz and acclaim that she generated from this tweet leads her to #teamnatural. I believe that any celebrity/famous person who shows support of the natural hair community (and the natural hair movement) helps with garnering mainstream acceptance and aid in changing the negative stereotypes and views of natural hair.

I ♥  #naturalhair 🙂

Naturally Inspiring – Solange Knowles

This is a recent picture of Solonge Knowels at an event. She wears her hair natural. I think it’s beautiful.

For black women, so much of our self-esteem, confidence and self-worth is wrapped around the state of our hair. A “bad” hair day can cross many events off of a social calendar. For so long society, media, pop culture and the work force has dictated what the standard of beauty for black women’s hair should be. The natural hair movement that is currently happening gains even more momentum with black celebrities joining. I find it quite encouraging to see popular, mainstream women be themselves naturally and do so with confidence, grace and a great sense of style while showing their God given beauty.
