Natural hair straightened

Here are a few recent pictures of my natural hair straightened.  This year I’ve only had my hair straightened a few times. Over the last two years I’d put myself on a low to no heat challenge because I’d experienced heat damaged from using too much heat.

The natural hair challenges that I created for myself have really helped me learn what works for my hair. They also seem to really work for my hair to become healthier.

There is definitely quite a bit of growth from the last time my hair was straightened. The stylist was able to make it silky straight too.

Do you have any natural hair challenges that you’re considering for the new year?wpid 20121216185003195 Natural hair straightened

Checking in

Hey there!!

It’s been quite a while since I’ve made any posts. Thought I’d do a quick check-in.

All is well these days. I’ve had quite a trying year, being pulled in many different directions and didn’t have a lot of time to put into here. But hey, the year is almost over and things are smoothing out.

Though I have not been very active blogging, I have been keeping up with all things related to natural hair and all of the going ons in the community :-). Including being in on curlBOX and the NaturalBOX, trying various natural hair products and deciding on a newer set of staple products.

I have some ideas and plans in the works for this blog including a new look/layout. In the mean time I thought I’d touch base, say hi and share a few pictures that I’d taken showing a recent wash & go.

August 2012 CurlBOX

Earlier in the year I began hearing about these monthly beauty subscription box services and became intrigued.

I did a bit of digging. Because I follow and research so much relating to natural hair I started stumbling across something called CurlBOX in the natural hair community. At the time it was in its infancy, and I didn’t completely understand what it was, how it worked etc.

Then a few short months later, through Beautiful Brown Girls I was given the opportunity to interview the founder, Myleik Teele, as a guest blogger on Beautiful Brown Girls online magazine. Read the interview.

Because of that interview opportunity I did a lot more research about CurlBOX and became so enamored with the busy savvy, marketing genius and genuine excitement that Myleik has for her business, brand and community that she is servicing with her company I couldn’t wait to be a part of CurlBOX some way somehow.

I learned that CurlBOX is a monthly beauty subscription service, $20.00 per month, which delivers a variety of products for curly natural hair. I signed up to be on the waiting list and I finally got into this exclusive service. In July I received my first CurlBOX. And I must admit I awaited the arrival of it with anticipation. I got my second one yesterday. Again, I couldn’t wait to see what would be in there.

Included in each CurlBOX have been full-sized products, samples, coupons, hair care and styling tips and a card with such positive words.

If you have even a tinge of product junkieism, lol, like variety, trying new products or still on the hunt for your holy grails a service like CurlBOX is definitely the way to go and it helps you stay mindful of your budget. Plus the anticipation and surprise factors are priceless!

Hi There!

I’ve recently become a guest blogger on Beautiful Brown Girls. Check out my first guest post. Enjoy!

Do you have naturally curly/natural hair or considering to go natural? If so the one of thing for sure that is common amongst every natural hair lady is that we spend a lot of time and money trying to find the products that work best for our hair.

In addition to starting up a natural hair blog, I am an avid follower of the natural hair community. Over the last few months I had been reading about something called CurlBOX. Initially, I completely didn’t know what this was. Though as I began to find out about it, I was quite intrigued to learn of this subscription-based service for naturally curly hair care products. Then I thought what a genius idea!

CurlBOX, is  an exclusive, affordable and effortless way to explore new hair care products which are delivered to subscribers each month. Monthly subscribers receive 5-7 quality hair product samples for a $20 monthly fee. In the CurlBOX you find hair care products from established brands as well as some up and coming brands.

Eden Body Works “Consolation Prize”

About a month ago I entered EDEN BodyWorks‘ Eco-Glam Ambassador contest hoping for a chance to become the brands’ Eco-Glam Ambassador.

Although I was not chosen, the company showed their appreciation by sending me an EDEN BodyWorks Peppermint Tea Tree gift pack along with a bonus of Eden’s new JojOba Monoi product.

A few weeks had passed from when I received the email explaining that I won the “consolation prize”. So, when I was greeted one morning by a FedEx delivery of the gift pack I was so pleasantly surprised. Here are the goodies I received:

Natural Hair & Black Art…

One of my dearest friends, who is a Black Art connoisseur, visited me in FL bringing with her this as a present for me. She said when she saw it she immediately thought of me, especially with it being art about natural hair.

I’m really touched by this piece. I can relate to each of the words, having felt or lived each one at some point in life. Each time I look at it I’m inspired in a different way whether it is a chuckle, reflection or a feeling I’m in the midst of.

That’s the magic of what art can do for you which I appreciate so much!

Thank you so much ASH!

Twisted Ponytail

Hi!

A few weeks ago Naptural85 posted a video on how to do a 2 Minute TWiSTeD Side Ponytail. I thought that it was a cute style that could be done easily and have been eager to try it.

A couple of days ago I saw the following picture posted on Facebook of another version of this style.415 Twisted Ponytail

With my hair being currently on day 3 of a twist out I thought I’d give it a try. Here’s my version of this easy go to style.

wpid 2012 04 15 19.38.23 Twisted Ponytail

I styled mine a bit different, making the twist in the front over instead of under or a loose french braid. I also made my ponytail a bit tighter. Though the next time I try this style I will make it looser because I like the free look of the model’s hair in the picture above.

It’s Spring!

It’s Springtime! My favorite time of the year. With the March Equinox the days are longer and the ideas of rebirth, renewal and regrowth are stronger. Easter, blooming flowers and trees and butterflies (some of my favorite things) all take place during the Springtime.

With the spirit of renewal, I want to do something different with my natural hair. I’m seriously contemplating getting it cut and I have been searching for different natural hair styles to try.

SpringTime Its Spring!

“Nature, in all its functions, is remarkably purposeful. Who, then, could possibly imagine that he or she was born into this world for no purpose?”

Do you have any plans for any kinds of rebirths, renewals or regrowths that you’d like to share?

Enjoy your season!

Hair Accessories for your Natural Hair Styling

Hi!

Once in a while I like to add hair accessories to my natural hair styles. Adding pins, flowers, head bands or scarfs gives a different look to a style, adds a pop of color and can be fun to play around with. I like to find a good sale on accessories, then stock up on them :). I came across some hair accessories that are on sale and thought I’d pass along. Enjoy!

All Natural Everything

Hi there!

Thought I’d catch you all up on my natural hairscapades. Recently my locks seemed weighted, lifeless and kinda blah. My regular routine just hadn’t been doing the tricks they once used to. This forced me to try looking into doing things a little differently.

I’m always open to trying something new. Because of this I started researching all natural, organic products that are free from parabens, sulfates, silicones, gluten, synthetic dyes chemicals, etc.

After researching the potential harms associated with many of the chemicals used in health and beauty products my curiosity, about what is safe and healthy, has definitely piqued.

One thing I learned, it is possible that products laden with chemicals could cause allergic reactions. Over the years I have had some consistent reactions that I could never quite pinpoint the causes. Some studies show a link between parabens and breast cancer, though there is no proof that parabens cause cancer.

I am not making a blanket statement saying that the use of products with chemicals in them are unsafe or bad and bad for you. There are definitely strong points on both sides of these arguments. Personally, I am choosing to error on the side of caution and explore using more natural products when I can.

So what initially started out as my quest in all natural hair products has expanded beyond just hair. I’ve been making an effort to purge many of my staple health and beauty products replacing them with all natural alternatives for everything from hair care products, soaps, lotions, deodorants, bubble bath etc.

I have to confess, making this change when it comes to makeup and perfumes will be the hardest challenge for me. Whole Foods, Lush and The Vitamin Store have become some of my favorite stores recently. One thing for sure, it is expensive trying to be healthy icon smile All Natural Everything

Below are some of the products that I’ve tried so far. I plan to give more in-depth product reviews of each, stay tuned.
